Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) are the engineering industry's answer to this problem. An ADR is a short, structured document that captures a significant technical decision: the context in which it was made, the options that were considered, the tradeoffs involved, and the consequences of the choice. Companies like AWS, Spotify, and ThoughtWorks have published ADR practices as standards. The problem is that writing a good ADR from scratch takes 30–45 minutes and requires careful thought about what to include.
This prompt does the structural work for you. Provide the decision, the alternatives you considered, and the key context — and it generates a complete, well-reasoned ADR that your team can commit directly to the repository.
When to Use It
Use this prompt immediately after making a significant technical decision, before the context fades. It is especially valuable for decisions that are hard to reverse, that will affect future team members who weren't in the room, or that represent a meaningful departure from prior patterns in the codebase.
What Makes This Prompt Effective
Most teams that try to write ADRs either write them too late (when context is lost) or too briefly (a one-liner that communicates nothing). This prompt forces completeness: it requires a status, explicit consequences, and a clear statement of what was rejected and why. The output is structured enough to be committed directly to a /docs/decisions/ folder and retrieved by future engineers through search.
Adapting the Output
The prompt uses the Michael Nygard ADR format — the most widely adopted standard — but you can instruct it to follow the MADR format (Markdown Architectural Decision Records) or your team's custom template by adding a formatting instruction. For very large decisions with many alternatives, break the prompt into two calls: one to explore tradeoffs, one to write the final record.
