Nintendo brings Star Fox back with a June 25 Switch 2 launch

Nintendo has officially brought Star Fox back. The company revealed a new Star Fox game for the Switch 2 on May 6, marking the series’ first brand-new entry in roughly a decade, and said it will launch on June 25.
That matters because Nintendo’s Switch 2 lineup has looked thinner than many fans expected for the rest of 2026. A recognizable first-party series with a firm release date gives the company a clearer midyear tentpole, while also reviving a franchise that has been mostly dormant since the Wii U era.
As first reported by The Verge, Nintendo says the new game is based on Star Fox 64, but it is not being pitched as a straight nostalgia rerelease. The company is pairing the familiar on-rails space-combat structure with redesigned characters, modernized visuals, and a wider set of vehicles, including a submarine alongside the standard Arwing-style flight combat.
Nintendo is also adding features that are much more in step with the current platform cycle. The game includes a four-on-four online dogfighting mode, support for mouse controls, and avatar features tied to GameChat that mirror a player’s expressions and movements during online play. For players who want a more retro feel, Nintendo says the game will also support the N64 controller.
Pricing is already locked in. Nintendo lists the game at $49.99 digitally and $59.99 physically, which places it below the premium tier for some modern first-party releases while still signaling that this is a major Switch 2 launch, not a budget side project.
The broader implication is that Nintendo is using Star Fox to strengthen the Switch 2 calendar without relying entirely on brand-new franchises. If the reboot lands well, it could reopen one of the company’s better-known but underused series and give Switch 2 a more balanced mix of legacy IP and new software.
