PlayStation Ends Physical Disc Production for New Games in January 2028

Sony will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting January 2028, the company announced on Wednesday through its PlayStation Blog. The move marks a definitive break with 30 years of console gaming's physical media tradition.
The decision comes as digital sales have overtaken physical copies by a wide margin. Sony reported that 85% of full-game software sales on PS4 and PS5 are now downloaded digitally, with physical disc purchases representing just 15% of revenue. "This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs," the company said in its announcement, signed by Sid Shuman, Senior Director of SIE Content Communications.
Games already released on disc will remain available in physical form. The cutoff applies only to new releases: titles launching after January 2028 will be sold exclusively through the PlayStation Store and digital retail partners. Backward-compatible physical copies of older games will continue to work on PlayStation hardware.
The timing is not surprising. GameStop has closed more than 1,300 stores over the past two fiscal years as foot traffic for physical game purchases collapsed. Microsoft has already moved toward a disc-free strategy, and most PC gaming has been digital-only for years via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Sony's announcement makes official what the market had already decided.
The shift has real implications for game preservation advocates, who argue that physical media provides a durable, archive-quality format independent of server availability or licensing terms. Digital-only titles are vulnerable to delisting — a concern that intensified when Sony announced it is also shutting down the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita digital storefronts.
For consumers, the most immediate impact is price: without a secondary market for used games, competition on pricing moves entirely to platform operators. PlayStation Store sales and subscription services like PlayStation Plus will increasingly set the floor for what players pay.
As first reported by TechCrunch and confirmed via the official PlayStation Blog, the announcement applies to all PlayStation hardware platforms.
