OpenAI Will Sell Its Models Through Google Cloud, Reaching All Three Major US Cloud Providers

OpenAI and Google Cloud announced on October 21 that OpenAI's frontier AI models, including its flagship GPT-6 Astra, along with its Codex coding agent, will become available through Google Cloud's Model Garden within the coming weeks, as first reported by Reuters. The deal means OpenAI's models will now be purchasable through all three major US cloud providers: Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and now Google Cloud, despite OpenAI and Google remaining direct competitors in search and core AI products.
Customers will be able to buy OpenAI's models through the Google Cloud Marketplace and apply existing cloud spending commitments toward the purchase, giving enterprise buyers a way to add OpenAI's models without opening a new billing relationship. Businesses in regulated industries will also be able to reach OpenAI's models through Google Cloud's access controls, data governance tools, and existing infrastructure, which the companies say makes it easier to build compliant agentic AI workflows. Neither company has disclosed pricing details, a customer list, or the revenue-sharing terms of the arrangement.
The deal is the clearest sign yet of how much OpenAI's relationship with Microsoft has changed. OpenAI's exclusive distribution arrangement with Microsoft expired in April 2026, and the company has steadily diversified its cloud footprint since: first adding Amazon Web Services, and now Google Cloud. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian has previously described the platform as “an open platform” that welcomes any model popular with developers, a positioning that puts Google Cloud's infrastructure business ahead of its rivalry with OpenAI on the product side.
The arrangement also underscores how deeply intertwined the major AI labs and cloud providers have become, even among direct competitors. Google struck an earlier compute-supply deal with OpenAI in 2025 to provide additional training capacity, and Google is also a major investor in and cloud supplier to Anthropic, OpenAI's closest rival. According to an IPO filing reviewed by Reuters, Anthropic drew 47% of its 2025 revenue from Amazon's and Google's cloud platforms. For Google, hosting OpenAI's models is a bet that cloud infrastructure revenue matters more than any single AI product rivalry, and that enterprise customers want model choice rather than lock-in to one vendor.
