OpenAI has connected ChatGPT for Healthcare to Epic, the electronic health record (EHR) platform that holds data for more than 325 million patients worldwide, giving authorized clinicians a way to pull medical histories directly into an AI chat interface. The integration, announced this week, lets doctors and care teams summarize clinical notes, lab results, medications, and specialist documentation without switching between systems during an appointment.

The integration supports two distinct workflows. In the first, clinicians pull authorized patient data out of Epic and into ChatGPT to review a patient's history, spot recent changes, and prepare for an upcoming visit. In the second, available in certain deployments, ChatGPT is embedded directly inside Epic's own interface, letting clinicians use AI-assisted review and note-preparation tools without ever leaving the patient's chart. Both paths are aimed at the same problem: clinicians spend a disproportionate share of appointment time hunting through scattered records rather than talking to patients.

Crucially, the access is strictly one-way. OpenAI says the integration is read-only, meaning ChatGPT can retrieve and summarize information from a patient's chart but cannot write anything back into the medical record. That distinction matters for a healthcare system that has been cautious about letting AI tools touch the record of truth directly, and it puts the burden of any clinical decision squarely back on the human reviewing the AI's summary rather than on the model itself.

Alongside the Epic integration, OpenAI also introduced a healthcare public data plugin that pulls in structured information from sources including ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed. In practice, that lets a clinician ask ChatGPT to check a patient's eligibility for a clinical trial, look up a medication's formal identifier, check an insurance coverage policy, or pull recent research — all from within the same session used to review the chart.

For hospitals and clinics already running ChatGPT Work, Codex, or OpenAI's connector tools under a signed Business Associate Agreement (BAA), the Epic integration slots into an existing compliance framework rather than requiring a new one, which should shorten the runway for health systems that already cleared OpenAI's tools for other uses. That said, embedding a general-purpose AI model into the clinical workflow — even in a read-only capacity — raises the same scrutiny any AI-assisted clinical tool faces: how reliably it summarizes complex, sometimes contradictory records, and how clinicians are trained to catch what it gets wrong before that summary shapes a real decision.

The move puts OpenAI in more direct competition with health-tech incumbents and Microsoft's own Nuance-powered clinical documentation tools, both of which have spent years building exactly this kind of EHR-embedded AI assistance. Epic's scale, more patient records than any other EHR vendor in the U.S., makes this integration one of the widest-reaching entry points OpenAI has secured into day-to-day clinical practice so far.
