Meta acquires Swedish AI agent startup Stilla just eight months after launch

Meta has acquired Stilla, a Stockholm-based AI agent startup, just eight months after the company launched. The deal, first reported by Axios, will fold Stilla's technology and team into Meta Business Agent, the company's AI system for helping merchants handle customer conversations and transactions across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.

The acquisition is notable less for its size than for its timing and target. Stilla was founded in Stockholm in 2024 by Siavash Ghorbani and Kaj Drobin, both former Shopify executives, and had raised only $5 million in pre-seed funding earlier this year. That Meta moved to acquire a company this early in its life — rather than partner with it or wait for it to mature — signals how aggressively large platforms are now shopping for AI agent talent and technology rather than building every capability from scratch.

What Stilla actually built

Stilla's platform is an AI agent designed for teams and organizations that retains company context and can take actions across workplace software, with integrations spanning tools like Slack, Linear, GitHub, and Notion to maintain an up-to-date view of what a team is working on. That context-retention capability — an agent that understands ongoing work rather than answering isolated queries — is precisely what Meta needs to scale automated business conversations without them feeling generic or repetitive.

Meta says its business messaging product is already used by more than 1 million businesses, with over 1 billion business conversations taking place across its apps daily. Plugging Stilla's context-aware agent technology into that volume gives Meta a much stronger foundation for the kind of persistent, stateful commerce conversations that have so far eluded most chatbot-style automation.

What happens to Stilla's existing customers

Stilla says its platform will continue operating as a service for existing customers even as its team and technology move to Meta. Meta has also said it plans to expand its presence in Sweden following the deal, suggesting the Stockholm team will remain largely intact rather than being fully absorbed and relocated.

The bigger pattern

This acquisition fits a pattern that's accelerated through 2026: major platforms acquiring small, recently-launched AI agent startups specifically for their underlying technology and founding teams, often well before the startup has proven a standalone business model. For founders, it's an increasingly viable exit path measured in months rather than years. For the broader AI agent startup ecosystem, it raises the question of how many genuinely independent agent platforms will still exist once the largest platforms have finished acquiring the best available technology and talent.
