Isar Aerospace's Spectrum rocket lifted off from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway on Saturday evening and reached low-Earth orbit in just seven minutes — making the Munich startup the first private company in Europe to successfully launch a fully commercial orbital rocket.

A milestone eight years in the making

The two-stage, 28-meter Spectrum rocket lifted off at 20:12 UTC on September 6th, climbing into the Arctic twilight from a spaceport above the 69th parallel. Seven minutes after launch, it was in orbit. The achievement came eight years after Daniel Metzler, Josef Fleischmann, and Markus Brandl founded Isar as students at the Technical University of Munich, tinkering with rocket components in a campus workshop.

"Today, Isar Aerospace opened space from continental Europe," CEO Metzler said in a statement. "We achieved within a few years what had taken the European space industry decades before. Europe now has sovereign access to space."

Why this matters for Europe's launch market

Europe's incumbent launch providers — Arianespace with its Ariane 6 and Avio with Vega-C — have long depended on government subsidies and the "geographical return" procurement model, where European space agencies guarantee revenue in exchange for manufacturing contracts spread across member states. That model has produced reliable but expensive rockets that struggle to compete with SpaceX on price.

Isar raised roughly $1 billion in private financing and now employs around 500 people, making it by far the best-capitalized private launch company in Europe. Its success gives European satellite operators an alternative to US launch providers at a time when geopolitical tensions are accelerating the push for "buy European" infrastructure.

The timing is notable: Europe recently cancelled planned upgrades to the Ariane 6 rocket, and Isar's Spectrum is now positioned as the continent's best answer to the commercial launch gap left behind.

The technical achievement

Andøya Spaceport, located in the Vesterålen archipelago in northern Norway, was purpose-built to support small satellite launches into polar and sun-synchronous orbits — exactly the trajectories most in demand by Earth observation and communications constellations. Spectrum's ability to launch from a European spaceport directly into these orbits without routing payloads through a US range is itself a competitive advantage.

Isar already has a pipeline of commercial and government customers waiting for launches. The company says its immediate priority is scaling production to meet demand rather than redesigning the vehicle.
