Google opens Googlebook pre-orders at $899 — a new laptop category built on Android and ChromeOS

Google on September 21 opened pre-orders for Googlebook, an entirely new category of premium laptops built on a unified OS that merges Android's technology stack with ChromeOS's desktop foundations. Five flagship models from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo start at $899 and ship October 4 in the US, with Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia following on October 5, as reported by the Google Blog.

Googlebook is Google's most explicit acknowledgment yet that ChromeOS needed more than incremental updates to compete with Windows and macOS at the premium end of the market. By anchoring the new platform on Android, Google gains access to millions of Play Store apps, native phone integration, and a shared software foundation with the 3 billion Android devices already in users' hands.

What's inside a Googlebook

Every Googlebook ships with either an Intel Core Ultra Series 3 or a Snapdragon X Elite processor, both paired with NPUs delivering over 45 TOPS of on-device AI performance. Minimum RAM is 16GB, displays go up to 2.8K OLED and are bright enough for direct sunlight, and battery life is rated up to 14 hours. All five models use aluminum, magnesium alloy, or carbon fiber bodies, and each includes a haptic glass trackpad and backlit keyboard.

A feature called the Glowbar — a thin light strip on the lid — lights up at boot, shows battery percentage with a sweep animation, and reacts to Gemini interactions. Google is also opening the Glowbar API to developers for custom animations.

Gemini Intelligence features

Three AI features are built into the OS at launch. Magic Pointer activates Gemini by wiggling the cursor, letting you ask questions about anything visible on screen without switching apps. Rambler, previously introduced on Pixel phones, transcribes spoken notes into structured, formatted documents in real time. Create My Widget generates custom desktop widgets from a plain-language description.

The platform also ships with a native Antigravity app for building, testing, and deploying Android apps directly on the Googlebook. Developers get a full Linux terminal environment secured by a pKVM-based Level 5 security hypervisor.

Phone-to-laptop continuity

The deeper pitch is for Android phone owners. Sign in with your Google account and your phone's saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and messages move to the Googlebook automatically, encrypted end-to-end. Android 17's Continue On feature lets you pick up exactly where you left off on your phone. Cast My Apps streams any Android app into a desktop window without installing it on the laptop. A shared Files app shows documents and photos from your phone directly.

Software and security

Googlebook gets 10 years of automatic OS updates with quarterly feature drops. Security architecture mirrors ChromeOS — Google Titan hardware root of trust, on-device malware detection, and the pKVM hypervisor for Linux isolation. Every purchase includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, three months of YouTube Premium, Adobe Photoshop, and a year of Nvidia GeForce NOW for gaming.
