Etched exits stealth with $1B in orders and a $5B valuation for its AI inference chip

Etched, a startup founded in 2022 by two Harvard dropouts, officially exited stealth on June 30 with a striking set of numbers: $1 billion in booked customer orders, $800 million in total funding, and a $5 billion valuation from its most recent $500 million round.
The company builds specialized semiconductor chips designed for one purpose — running AI inference as cheaply and quickly as possible. Rather than selling chips alone, Etched packages them into what it calls "frontier inference clusters": complete systems combining custom silicon, purpose-built racks, and proprietary software. These bundles are currently undergoing customer testing.
The Inference Bottleneck
Inference — the process of a model responding to a user query — has become the dominant cost in AI at scale. Etched co-founder and CEO Gavin Uberti has said inference is "the biggest bottleneck and the biggest cost center for AI companies." That's the problem Etched is betting its existence on solving.
The company's chips are manufactured by TSMC, which successfully produced the first run earlier in 2026. This de-risks the manufacturing question that has killed other chip startups — getting TSMC to fabricate your design is the hardest gating step.
Star-Studded Investor List
The $500 million December round was led by Stripes, with participation from VentureTech Alliance, Jane Street, Hudson River Trading, Two Sigma, and Ribbit Capital. The angel list reads like a who's-who of AI: Andrej Karpathy, Geoffrey Hinton, Fei-Fei Li, Arthur Mensch, and Scott Wu backed the company. So did billionaires Stanley Druckenmiller and Peter Thiel.
Competitive Context
Etched enters a crowded space. Cerebras recently went public, Groq raised $650 million this month, and Nvidia continues to dominate. But the total addressable market for AI inference is expanding fast enough that multiple specialized players could thrive simultaneously, particularly if they can undercut Nvidia on price-per-inference for specific workloads.
As first reported by TechCrunch, Etched's full systems are expected to ship to customers later in 2026.
