Blue Origin raises $10 billion at $130 billion valuation in first outside funding round

Blue Origin has closed its first-ever external funding round, raising $10 billion at a $130 billion pre-money valuation — a milestone for the company that Bezos has bankrolled himself since its founding in 2000. Coatue Asset Management is leading the round with roughly $4 billion, while Bezos himself is putting in an additional $2 billion alongside a group of undisclosed large investors, as first reported by TechCrunch.

The timing is significant. Blue Origin's flagship New Glenn rocket exploded during testing in late May, just ahead of its fourth planned launch, and the company still hasn't determined the root cause. The Cape Canaveral launchpad needs to be rebuilt before New Glenn can fly again, and the incident — along with the timeline uncertainty — has hung over the company's competitive position in commercial launch.

Despite that setback, investors are betting on the long game. The funding round gives Blue Origin a war chest to pursue four core priorities: restoring New Glenn to operational status, supporting NASA's Artemis program for lunar missions, building out space-based data centers, and expanding the Terawave satellite internet network.

The external fundraise also comes with an unavoidable comparison. SpaceX, Blue Origin's main rival, went public last month at a $1.75 trillion valuation after raising more than $85 billion in its IPO — making the gap between the two companies impossible to ignore. At $130 billion, Blue Origin is valued at roughly one-thirteenth of SpaceX.

Still, a fresh $10 billion gives Blue Origin the runway to stabilize New Glenn, pursue government contracts, and build toward a commercial launch cadence that could eventually close that gap. Whether investors in the round share that optimism over the actual timeline will depend entirely on what the post-mortem on the May explosion reveals.
