Beta Technologies and a multistate collaborative of transportation agencies have completed the first operational flights under the U.S. Department of Transportation and FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, using electric aircraft to transport manufactured organs for United Therapeutics between airports in Virginia and Maryland.

The flights covered approximately 275 nautical miles across a four-airport corridor: Virginia Tech/Montgomery Executive Airport in Blacksburg, Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport, Frederick Municipal Airport in Maryland, and Martin State Airport near Baltimore. Beta is the most active participant in the federal program, involved in seven of its eight demonstration projects nationwide.

A federal push to accelerate advanced air mobility

The eVTOL Integration Pilot Program was established through a Trump administration executive order aimed at speeding up development and eventual certification of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. The program spans 26 states and is designed to generate the operational data regulators need to build certification policy and commercialization frameworks for an aircraft category that doesn't fit neatly into existing FAA rules written for conventional planes and helicopters.

Virginia and Maryland, alongside Pennsylvania, are leading what the program calls the Multistate Collaborative eIPP National Integration Complex — a coordinated effort involving four aircraft manufacturers and three operators, with plans to expand into healthcare, cargo, and defense mission profiles across additional states in the coming months.

Why organ transport, specifically

Choosing organ logistics as the flagship use case is a deliberate signal. Transplant organs have narrow viability windows measured in hours, and current logistics rely heavily on chartered aircraft and ground transport that can be delayed by traffic, weather, or airport congestion. An eVTOL network that can move between smaller regional airports — bypassing the congestion of major commercial hubs — offers a plausible speed and reliability advantage for time-critical medical cargo, which is why Beta's long-standing partnership with United Therapeutics has anchored much of its flight-testing program to date.

"Our long-term partnership with United Therapeutics has shaped BETA and our mission to build the aircraft, infrastructure, and operational ecosystem," said CEO Kyle Clark, tying the mission-specific use case directly to the company's broader infrastructure strategy.

What's still ahead

Beta has flown more than 160,000 nautical miles to date and operates over 100 charging sites across the US and internationally, positioning it as the incumbent infrastructure provider as the eVTOL sector scales. The company's VTOL aircraft is targeting certification in 2028, with its conventional takeoff-and-landing variant on track for 2027 — both dates that keep Beta on a similar timeline to rivals Joby Aviation and Archer, which are also flying under FAA pilot programs but have not yet achieved full type certification.

The pilot program's stated purpose — generating real operational data before rules get written, rather than writing rules first and hoping the technology fits — reflects a regulatory approach the FAA has increasingly favored for categories where waiting for perfect certainty would mean waiting years longer than necessary.
