Apple ships the rebuilt Siri AI in iOS 27 public beta after years of delay

Apple released the first public betas of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, tvOS 27, and watchOS 27 on July 13, and for once the version number isn't the headline. The real story is Siri AI, the long-delayed conversational rebuild of Apple's voice assistant, which is now in the hands of anyone willing to enroll in the public beta program rather than staying locked inside developer builds.

What actually changed

The new Siri moves well past the command-and-response assistant Apple shipped for over a decade. It can hold ongoing conversations, understand follow-up questions without the user repeating context, read and reason about whatever is currently on screen, and chain multi-step actions inside and between apps — drafting a document, then finding a photo, then sending it, as a single continuous request rather than three separate commands. Apple has given it a dedicated Siri app that stores conversation history, treating it more like a persistent assistant than a one-shot voice command tool.

Not every device gets the full experience

Apple is gating the most demanding features behind hardware requirements. Expressive Voices and enhanced dictation require at least 12GB of RAM, which restricts full functionality to the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPad models with an M4 chip or later, and Macs with sufficient memory. iCloud+ subscribers get higher daily usage limits on the cloud-dependent AI features, adding a subscription dimension to what has historically been a free, on-device assistant. At launch, Siri AI is English-only and unavailable in the European Union — a market where Apple has repeatedly delayed Apple Intelligence features over regulatory uncertainty tied to the Digital Markets Act.

Beyond Siri: performance and the rest of the release

Apple is pairing the AI overhaul with broad performance claims: app launches up to 30% faster, photo ingest into the Photos app up to 70% faster, and AirDrop transfers up to 80% faster. macOS 27 Golden Gate also walks back some of the criticized transparency effects from last year's Liquid Glass redesign, adding sharper contrast and making background app transparency mandatory rather than optional. iOS 27 adds a new customization slider and revamped parental controls, while watchOS 27 gets a Dynamic App Grid and expanded Workout Buddy features.

Why the delay mattered

Apple first previewed a more capable, LLM-driven Siri at WWDC in 2024, then delayed the feature repeatedly, prompting sustained criticism that the company had fallen behind Google's Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT in the assistant race. Shipping Siri AI in public beta now — roughly two years after the initial preview — puts Apple back in direct competition for a category it effectively ceded during the delay. Whether Siri AI can close that gap depends on how it performs outside controlled demos, which is exactly what a public beta with millions of participants is designed to stress-test before the general release later this year.

Public beta access requires enrolling in Apple's Beta Software Program at beta.apple.com, after which updates arrive through the standard Settings > General > Software Update path.
