Anthropic pulls Claude Fable 5 from subscription plans, shifts to per-token credits

Anthropic's flagship AI model, Claude Fable 5, is no longer bundled with the company's subscription plans as of July 7, 2026. The change affects Pro, Max, Team, and qualifying Enterprise plans — all of which previously included Fable 5 access for up to 50% of weekly usage limits. Users who want to continue using the model must now purchase usage credits at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, roughly double the cost of Claude Opus 4.8 and five times the price of Sonnet 5.

Why Anthropic made the change

The company attributed the move to surging, unpredictable demand following Fable 5's relaunch on July 1 after a three-week suspension caused by US government export controls. Anthropic said demand is "very high, and difficult to predict," and is rolling out access "conservatively, in stages" to manage capacity. The new credit-based system effectively lets Anthropic ration supply by price — heavy users pay more; lighter users naturally migrate to lower-cost alternatives like Sonnet 5 or Opus 4.8.

Is this permanent?

Anthropic says no. A Claude Code engineer stated publicly: "While it will come off subscriptions after July 7th, we aim to restore Fable as a standard part of our subscriptions as soon as capacity allows." No timeline was given. As reported by BleepingComputer, Anthropic has framed this as a temporary capacity-management measure, not a permanent tier restructuring.

Who gets hit hardest

Developers running agentic pipelines, complex evaluations, or production applications specifically targeting Fable 5's capability profile face the sharpest cost increase. A team consuming 10 million input tokens per month would go from paying nothing extra to $100 in monthly credits on top of their existing subscription fee. Casual users who occasionally prompt the model are less affected — they can switch to Sonnet 5 for most tasks without meaningful quality loss. For enterprise customers, the impact depends on whether their negotiated contracts include consumption-based access arrangements that bypass the new credit requirement.

The export control backstory

The subscription change is a direct downstream effect of the export control crisis that briefly took both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 offline starting June 12. The US government applied export restrictions to the models, which Anthropic later confirmed were lifted on July 1. The relaunch triggered a demand spike that Anthropic's infrastructure wasn't scaled to absorb under flat-rate subscription pricing. The credit mechanism buys the company time to build capacity before restoring inclusive access.
