Comcast and Charter are quietly fixing cable internet's biggest weakness: upload speed

For three decades, cable internet has had one glaring weakness: upload speed. A cable connection could deliver hundreds of megabits down while choking out at 20 or 30 megabits up. DOCSIS 4.0, the new cable modem standard now rolling out across the US, is the first version that actually fixes this — and 2026 is the year it stops being a lab demo and starts showing up in real homes.
Why upload speed was always the weak link
Cable networks were built on a fundamentally asymmetric design. The coaxial spectrum was split so the majority of frequency bands carried downstream traffic — video, web pages, downloads — while a narrow sliver handled upstream requests. That made sense in the 1990s and 2000s when the internet was mostly a consumption medium. It stopped making sense once video calls, cloud backups, live streaming, and remote work turned upload bandwidth into a daily requirement rather than an edge case.

What actually changed
DOCSIS 4.0 supports up to 10 Gbps downstream and 6 Gbps upstream, a dramatic rebalancing that finally makes symmetrical multi-gigabit service possible over existing coaxial cable. Comcast delivered the world's first live DOCSIS 4.0 deployment, and by early 2026 the company says the standard is no longer confined to a handful of pilot cities — it now reaches millions of homes across its footprint.
Charter is moving on a similar timeline. CEO Christopher Winfrey has stated that symmetrical and multi-gig speeds will reach 50% of Spectrum's current network footprint by the end of 2026. Mediacom is following Comcast's rollout pattern, and according to CableLabs, every member operator has some form of DOCSIS 4.0 deployment or testing underway.
The technical trick: Extended Spectrum DOCSIS
The upstream gains come primarily from a specification called Extended Spectrum DOCSIS (ESD), which pushes usable frequency further up the spectrum than DOCSIS 3.1 allowed, freeing more bandwidth for upstream channels without requiring a full fiber rebuild. Operators are pairing this with Distributed Access Architecture (DAA), which moves signal processing closer to the network edge and reduces the noise and latency that accumulate over long coaxial runs.
This matters because it means DOCSIS 4.0 is a software-and-hardware upgrade to existing plant, not a full fiber replacement. That's a materially cheaper and faster rollout path than the fiber-to-the-home buildouts telecom companies have spent a decade financing.
What this means if you're a customer
If you're on Comcast, Charter, Mediacom, or Cox in a market where DOCSIS 4.0 is live, expect new tiers advertising symmetrical speeds — likely priced at a premium over current asymmetric multi-gig plans initially. Retail DOCSIS 4.0 modems are expected to reach store shelves in 2026, meaning customers won't necessarily need a technician visit to access the new speeds once their local node is upgraded, provided their existing modem supports the new spec.
Most US cable customers are still on DOCSIS 3.1 today, and that won't change overnight — Vecima's chief commercial officer Clay McCreery has called 2026 the year "large scale" DOCSIS 4.0 and DAA upgrades begin taking form, not the year they finish.
