IonQ completes $1.8 billion SkyWater acquisition, becoming quantum computing's first vertically integrated company

IonQ has completed its $1.8 billion acquisition of SkyWater Technology, closing the deal on July 31, 2026 and creating what the company describes as the first vertically integrated, full-stack quantum computing platform.

The acquisition, first announced in January 2026, hands IonQ direct ownership of SkyWater's semiconductor fabrication facilities in Minnesota, Florida, and Texas — the only exclusively U.S.-based foundry group in the country. For IonQ, that means ending its dependence on third-party manufacturers, often overseas, to produce the quantum processing units at the heart of its hardware.

Why foundry ownership changes the quantum game

Until now, every major quantum computing company sourced chip fabrication from external foundries. That arrangement introduces delays, limits design flexibility, and creates supply chain exposure that makes defense and government customers nervous. SkyWater's facilities carry Pentagon accreditation for sensitive work — a credential that transfers to IonQ's new combined entity.

With its own foundry, IonQ can iterate on quantum hardware faster, optimize processes specifically for quantum device requirements, and reduce the lead times that have historically slowed quantum hardware development cycles.

SkyWater keeps its existing customers

SkyWater will continue operating under its own name as a wholly owned IonQ subsidiary and will keep serving its current commercial and government foundry customers. The company has done manufacturing work across semiconductor, defense, and medical device sectors. That customer base — and the revenue that comes with it — remains intact.

IonQ's existing quantum systems have attracted customers including Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and Nvidia, who have used its hardware for drug discovery, materials science, and other computationally intensive workloads. In 2025, IonQ achieved a world-record 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, a key metric of quantum computational precision.

What comes next

The combined company will hold its Q2 2026 earnings call on August 5, with an investor day planned for September 8. IonQ has not disclosed the financial breakdown between cash and stock in the $1.8 billion deal.

The acquisition fits into a broader pattern of U.S. tech companies moving to secure domestic supply chains in strategic technology sectors. China has made quantum computing a national priority with substantial state-backed investment. IonQ's vertical integration move — controlling design and manufacturing under one roof — gives it a structural advantage that competitors without foundry ownership cannot easily replicate.
