Adobe acquires Topaz Labs to bring Emmy-winning AI enhancement into Firefly and Creative Cloud

Adobe announced today it will acquire Topaz Labs, the AI company whose video and image enhancement tools are trusted by professional filmmakers, documentary editors, and 20 of the world's 50 largest companies. The deal brings Emmy Award-winning technology into Adobe's creative AI stack at a moment when creators increasingly blend real footage with AI-generated content — and need high-quality tools to make the seams invisible.

Topaz Labs is known for products like Topaz Video AI, which handles upscaling, frame interpolation, noise removal, and stabilization; Topaz Photo AI for image sharpening and restoration; and Gigapixel AI for resolution enhancement. Award-winning filmmaker Robert Stone used Topaz to restore documentary footage for 4K release. Asteria Film Co. relies on it for hybrid AI filmmaking workflows. The technology has an Emmy Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for its video technology.

What Adobe gets from the deal

The acquisition adds two things Adobe has been missing. First, state-of-the-art video enhancement models at professional quality — Adobe Firefly has been strong on image generation but has not matched Topaz's depth in real-footage enhancement. Second, Topaz's proprietary Neurostream technology, which allows large AI models to run locally on consumer devices rather than requiring cloud compute. That enables high-quality enhancement within Premiere Pro and Photoshop even offline.

Adobe President of Creativity & Productivity David Wadhwani said the company plans to integrate Topaz models across Firefly, Firefly Services, and Creative Cloud apps. Topaz Labs CEO Eric Yang, who co-founded the company 20 years ago, will continue leading the team post-acquisition. Topaz's standalone products will also remain available through the company's website after the deal closes.

Why the timing matters

The problem Topaz solves — making AI-generated and traditionally captured content look identical in quality — has become central to creative workflows. Generative AI can produce video clips, but compositing them with real footage exposes mismatches in grain, sharpness, and resolution. Topaz's enhancement models handle exactly that remediation layer.

Adobe's Firefly faces competition from Adobe's own customers who have adopted external AI tools like Runway, Kling, and Sora for generation. Pulling Topaz's enhancement capabilities in-house tightens the loop between generation and polish, keeping more of the professional workflow inside Creative Cloud.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals, as reported by Adobe's official press release published June 25, 2026.
